Extinguishing a Fireplace Fire
10/28/2019 (Permalink)
Fireplace Safety should be top of mind during the colder months. You should never fall asleep with a fire in the fireplace. To quickly extinguish a fireplace fire, don’t throw water on it. Throwing water on the fire will create a cloud of smoke and contaminate your home. Instead of pouring water on a fire you should:
- Spread out the embers with a fireplace poker
- Smother the fire with the ashes.
- Pour a thin layer of baking soda over the fire.
Why baking soda? Baking soda is a common ingredient in fire extinguishers. Baking soda is also used when putting out grease fires.
While water can be used to extinguish the fireplace fire, it will take more water and create a larger mess.
