Brunswick to St. Simon's, It's Time To Get Ready For Storms And Water Damage
3/10/2021 (Permalink)
It’s time to think about the rains that will come to the Brunswick area. Is your home safe from water damage? It’s a good idea to make preparations now, before it’s too late. If you aren’t prepared beforehand for what can happen, your home can have additional damage.
A lot of us live in areas where we don’t need to worry about flash-flooding or a hillside collapsing, but even so, the steady rains of spring-time can present problems. Take a good look around your home. Is the weather-stripping in doors and windows in good repair, ready for damp conditions? Do exterior doors fit tightly and close as they should? The roof needs to be completely watertight, as well, to protect furniture and other possessions from water damage.
Your driveway needs to have a well-planned drainage system so you and your family can get to and from their vehicles safely. If people have to wade into your house, your floors will suffer, and a slip-and-fall accident due to wet floors can be a disaster for everyone. Make sure you keep an eye on potholes, as water can dig pretty deep in a very short period of time.
Rain gutters and spouts need to be checked periodically; if a rain gutter becomes clogged with debris such as dead leaves or small branches, they aren’t going to be able to drain away all that rain water. As water backs up, it will leak back into the walls of your building, sometimes without you knowing it, and you can find yourself with water damage in your walls, and possibly even a mold problem.
Unstable power lines and telephone poles can be a possible issue if the ground becomes saturated during a spring rainstorm. Contact your Brunswick utilities companies and have them come take a good look prior to wet weather to make sure you and your loved ones won’t suffer an accident or damages due to falling utility poles and/or wiring.
Paper records will be lost if exposed to water; make sure that your hard copies are kept in a manner that will preserve them in case of any water damage. Scanning them and saving to your computer system is always a good idea, and backing up those computer records will keep your business in working order, no matter what comes! For insurance purposes, it might be a good idea to create a photographic record of your property and possession, in case of water damages due to bad weather. Save these photos to the cloud and/or a cd so that they will always be accessible.
If your home is built on or near a flood plain in the Brunswick area, make sure you have a communication system in place that everyone understands clearly - in the case of an evacuation, does your family know what to do and where to go?
