Chimney Tips to Keep Your Family Warm…and Safe during the winter months.
11/10/2022 (Permalink)
What causes chimney fires?
The build-up of creosote along the chimney lining walls can facilitate the start of a chimney fire. All fires create soot and residue build-up, especially wood-burning fireplaces and stoves. This build-up is caused by the unburned materials in the smoke accumulating along the chimney walls and creating a sticky substance that can easily catch fire. The smoke from the fire contains a substance similar to tar and when the temperatures within the chimney are below 250 degrees Fahrenheit, the substance will condense along the chimney surface. When the temperature drops below 150 degrees Fahrenheit, the substance turns into a dark, sticky substance that is also highly flammable.
A chimney that is dirty, or blocked can inhibit proper venting of smoke up the flue and can also cause a chimney fire. Nearly all residential fires originating in the chimney are preventable.
Maintenance - Good maintenance is a very important step in preventing chimney fires!
- Have your chimney checked annually by a qualified chimney professional
- Burn only well-seasoned hardwoods
- Start fires with clean newspaper or dry kindling – Gasoline or kerosene should never be used to start a fire
- Keep the area in front of the fireplace clear of paper and debris. It can be tempting during the holidays to place decorations close to the fireplace but keep them at a safe distance.
- If your fireplace doesn't have a glass door, use a wire mesh screen.
- Install a chimney cap.
- Install a carbon monoxide detector.
- Have your chimney sweep ensure that your chimney has an appropriate liner.
- Following a violent storm, earthquake, flood or lightning strike, have your chimney inspected for damage - inside and out.
Prevention - Remember prevention is your best defense against fire.
Commercial Fire Damage and Insurance - What Next?
10/3/2022 (Permalink)
Smoke damage from a fire can affect your business in Saint Simons, GA, in many ways, and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed if you’re unsure what costs your insurance company will cover. Understanding what expenditures your insurance is likely to pay can help you eliminate stress throughout the cleanup process.
1. Property Damage
After a fire, many items in your business may be destroyed, and insurance should be able to compensate you for your losses. Even if some things in your building were left untouched by the fire itself, water from hoses or sprinklers can damage articles within them. Often, a cleanup and restoration company can assist you in taking inventory and provide you with an estimate of what items have been harmed and what can be repaired.
2. Smoke and Soot
In addition to causing destruction to articles within your building, a fire can leave behind smoke and soot damage. They can affect the structure of your property, and it’s often necessary to thoroughly clean and restore a business that has been rampaged by a fire. In some instances, major soot and smoke damage may require you to replace structures in your building. Luckily, fire insurance should cover the costs of smoke cleaning.
3. Business Interruption
If a business needs to temporarily close in order to make repairs, the costs of lost revenue can quickly add up over time. However, cleaning a building and making important renovations can be time-consuming, and complex repairs should not be rushed. Insurance companies will generally cover the costs of this interruption, allowing you to focus on restoring your establishment to its original state.

Using a Fire Extinguisher
9/30/2022 (Permalink)
Not only is it smart to keep fire extinguishers in your home or business, but it’s also the law in many states.
It's important to make sure you have the right types of fire extinguishers on hand to put out common fires.
Getting started with fire extinguishers
The first thing to do when choosing a fire extinguisher is to decide which rooms in your house need one. You should keep at least one on each level of your house. Make sure you keep fire extinguishers handy where fires are more likely to start, like in the kitchen and garage
Learning how to use your fire extinguisher
Once you've made your purchases, familiarize yourself with the fire extinguisher directions so you’ll be prepared in case you need to put out a fire. Typically, fire extinguishers are easy to use in the case of a fire. Most of the types operate using the P.A.S.S. technique:
?Pull the pin on the fire extinguisher to break the tamper seal.
?Aim the fire extinguisher low, with the nozzle pointed at the base of the fire.
?Squeeze the handle of the fire extinguisher to release the extinguishing agent.
?Sweep the nozzle from side to side while pointing at the base of the fire until it is extinguished.
?If the fire re-ignites, repeat the last 3 steps.
If you have to use a fire extinguisher it may leave residue along with the potential fire damage. SERVPRO of Brunswick is here to help.

In less than 30 seconds a small flame can get completely out of control and turn into a major fire, and thick, black smoke can fill a house in minutes. That is according to the Georgia Emergency Management Agency. They also say that residential fires fires cause nearly 3,000 deaths and more than 12,000 injuries nationwide each year.
It can be confusing to know where to start after the first responders have finished their work. The clean up after a fire in your home will take time and patience.
If you detect heat or smoke when entering a damaged building, evacuate immediately.
If you must leave your home because a building inspector says the building is unsafe, ask someone you trust to watch the property during your absence.

A fireplace can also be dangerous if not cared for properly. Animals can build nests during the warmer months, without the owner knowing.
Chimney Fires In Brunswick
Here are some chimney cleaning tips that can lessen the chance of a fire.
First, do an inspection. If you have a steep roof, then this isn’t a DIY project, and you need to enlist the help of a professional. There are certified chimney sweeps throughout the country, including in the Brunswick area, and can help with this project.
During the inspection, you are looking for creosote buildup. It may not look like a big deal, but it ignites at only 451 degrees and expands from there, able to build to over 2,000 degrees. At that temperature, it can engulf your entire chimney and potentially destroy your home or cause some serious fire damage.
If you are in the habit of burning green wood, make sure you have your chimney cleaned or inspected every 50 burns or so. To know whether wood is green or not, look for moisture bubbling out from the cut ends of the log. Wet, green wood doesn’t burn cleanly and will send particles up your chimney, which in turn builds up as creosote and soot. Choose hardwoods such as oak or birch, which burn hotter and cleaner.
A professional cleaning would include an inspection for soot build-up and for an cracks or obstructions that could cause issues. Older chimneys can sometimes have gaps in the clay liner where mortar has fallen out, which causes water damage and can make your chimney unstable.
If you do find yourself in need of a chimney sweep, look for someone who is insured and properly certified in your area. They will ensure that you are safe from fire damage due to a dirty fireplace and chimney.
If you do have fire damage, the team at SERVPRO of Brunswick has the training and experience to restore the damage to your home. We can also handle water damages and are experienced in mold prevention. Call us at (912)-264-9064 today.
Brunswick Fire Damage Needs Immediate Attention
1/8/2021 (Permalink)
Fire damage gets worse the longer it goes untreated, causing unpleasant odors that can even be harmful. Call SERVPRO of Brunswick (912) 264 6094.
A fire in your Brunswick home may result in several kinds of damage. Water and chemicals used to put out the fire can unfortunately, result in even more destruction to your property that you will have to take care of after the fire is extinguished.
After The Fire
Once the fire is out, any water that was used will need to be dried as soon as possible, since carpets and floors are particularly susceptible to mold issues if left damp for too long. Water can also damage your walls if they have to be soaked, so drying those materials is also important.
Chemical extinguishers leave toxic residues behind, and that will need to be cleaned up right away. Of course, using these chemicals is preferable to letting a fire spread, but the cleanup aftermath can be quite extensive and costly.
The SERVPRO of Brunswick team is available for you to perform any professional services, such as humidification, and the cleanup of any harmful chemicals left behind. We can also assess your situation and let you know of any possible mold growth that is or might be taking place due to a damp atmosphere.
Fire Damage Clean Up
Soot cleanup is the next issue; soot results from incompletely burned organic matter and can do serious damage to your home if left untreated. It is able to penetrate such items as upholstered furniture, draperies, carpets, and walls. SERVPRO is experienced in dealing with these types of problems, and we can help assess your situation. Air ducts and all HVAC filters will need to be replaced, and we can do that as well.
Smoke destruction can be handled after water and soot are taken care of. Smoke damage gets worse the longer it goes untreated, causing unpleasant odors that can even be harmful. Perhaps it is at its most damaging when it comes to the fabric of any textiles in your home, such as furniture, clothing, and carpet.

Fireplace Safety Tips
11/10/2020 (Permalink)
We specialize in fire and water damage restoration; it’s the cornerstone of our business.
Winter is a great season for sitting around the fireplace, enjoying time with family and soaking in the holiday spirit. Especially if you love using your fireplace.
Many people don’t know that they could be getting much more value out of it than they think! There’s more to the fireplace than lighting a log and huddling close to stay warm when it’s cold.
SERVPRO of Brunswick has some tips for you to get more out of your fireplace this winter.
Wood Management
Most people will take whatever wood they can get and light it on fire without a second thought. There’s more to getting the most out of your fires than tossing wood on the spit! First, always ensure that any wood you burn is dry.
Any type of moist wood can create an excessive amount of smoke, which means you’re not burning the full log and getting your money’s worth. Ensure that the wood is seasoned, dry, and from a trusted supplier.
When burning the logs, make sure they fit onto the spit to ensure that there is no fire safety hazard. Any log that sticks out is susceptible to have its embers float into the air, creating a hazard. Make sure the logs fit before placing them.
Cleaning Regularly
One of the biggest cleaning offenses that most people do is neglect to clean their chimney. It becomes a massive fire safety hazard if there is any type of blockage in the chimney. Make sure to clean during the winter months to avoid buildup, or hire a professional to help clean it for you. Being proactive here could help ensure the safety of you and your family.
Learn the Proper Way to Start a Fire
Too often people plop a piece of wood onto the spit and light it on fire. To get the most out of the burn, you need to start small and build yourself up to a decent fire. Begin by starting a small fire with dry kindling, and begin to add more piece of wood. Provide the fire with air to breathe, as this will help the fire spread slowly over the logs. Once the flames have stopped and the fire has come to a smoldering burn, leave it here for a bit before adding another log.
Just because there is no visual flame doesn’t mean heat isn’t coming from the firepit. This will help conserve you firewood consumption, and keep you warm much longer.

Avoiding An Electrical Fire In Your Brunswick Home
10/29/2020 (Permalink)
Electrical fires happen more often than you would think. Over 25,000 electrical fires happen here in the United States, and approximately 1,300 people lose their lives because of them annually; and even if the damage is not that extreme, fire damage can be extremely damaging to a home or business, oftentimes leading to unexpected water damage from firefighting efforts as well. There are some simple steps you can take to prevent these electrical fires from happening in your home and office, and we will share them here.
One of the most important steps you can take is to have your Brunswick home or business inspected for hazardous situations that can cause a fire. A licensed electrician can help to keep you, your loved ones, and your employees safe by letting you know what needs to be done. Replace wiring in older homes, since wiring is not made to last forever.
A very common cause of electrical fires is electrical cord, plug, and outlet damage. If these items are found to be tattered or frayed, worn out or showing burn signs, they need to be replaced immediately. Cords in poor condition can overheat or cause sparks, and so, a fire. Replacing damaged cords is a simple and relatively inexpensive safeguard against electrical fires and can even be purchased for your appliances separately if any are in poor condition.
In this day and age of digital everything, take steps to avoid overloading your outlets. Overburdened sockets are another risk factor for an electrical fire, and common as well. The United States Fire Administration recommends that you buy power strips that come equipped with internal overload protection; this feature will ensure that a strip shuts off its power supply as soon as it becomes overloaded, helping prevent fire damage.
Another hazard is the portable electric space heater, and most people are aware of the danger. But any appliance that plugs in can be dangerous if not used carefully. Flammable materials such as blankets, towels, and rugs, need to be watched and kept away from any appliances that produce heat or can overheat, as that can easily start a fire.
Faulty wiring is another hazard, and if a flickering lamp or sparking outlet is something you experience, contact a licensed electrician in the Brunswick area to make the repairs necessary. If anything that conducts electricity feels warm to the touch, have your electrician check it out and see if it needs to be replaced.
Just a few minutes of preventive measures and a few dollars to replace those items that could be dangerous can save lives and your Brunswick property, and save you from expensive fire damage clean up.

Clogged Dryer Exhaust Ducts: A Common Cause of House Fires
2/17/2020 (Permalink)
Most of us don’t think about the maintenance of our dryers, but we should! The U.S. Fire Administration reports that every year there are thousands of home fires started by clothes dryers.
Lint and debris can build up in your dryer vent, reducing airflow to the dryer, backing up dryer exhaust gases, which can result in a fire hazard. It is recommended you have your dryer exhaust system cleaned at least twice a year.
How to tell if your dryer vent is clogged
- The normal drying cycle is not drying clothes
- Clothes are hotter at the end of the cycle
- A large amount of lint accumulates in the lint trap
- Your laundry area is more humid
- The burnt smell in your laundry room
- The outside dryer vent cover is not lifting
There are tips online on how to clean your dryer vent system, but it is recommended you hire a professional. In addition to the reduced threat of fire, a cleaning can pay for itself in less than a year through improved efficiency with less drying time required.
SERVPRO of Brunswick is here for you should you do have a loss from a dryer vent fire.

While these heaters keep us warm and cozy, they can pose a serious threat to you and your home. In fact, the National Fire Protection Agency reports that space heaters account for more than 44% of home heating-related fires. If you plan on using your space heater this year, you should be aware of the potential dangers!
- Space heaters should be away from flammable materials. True to their name, space heaters can produce a lot of heat. In many of the fires they are associated with, they were too close to flammable materials and caused them to catch fire. That’s why it’s strongly advised that they are kept at least 3 feet away from anything that can burn.
- Space heaters should be plugged directly into the wall. Because they draw a lot of energy, space heaters should never be plugged into an extension cable or a power. And even if they are plugged into the wall, nothing else should be plugged into the same outlet. Otherwise, they can cause a fire and/or electrical hazard.
- Space heaters should never be left unattended. For the above reasons, you should never leave a space heater unattended, even for just a few minutes. While they are great for supplemental heat, they are potential fire and electrical hazards.
As you start to use your space heater in the coming months, it’s important to remember that it carries a risk. If you’re responsible and remain aware of your surroundings, you can safely keep warm.

Increased Risk for Kitchen Fires
11/20/2019 (Permalink)
“When most of us think about Thanksgiving, images of turkey, stuffing and time spent with loved ones typically come to mind, not fire hazards. However, an increased risk of fire is, in fact, a reality of Thanksgiving. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), three times as many home cooking fires occur on Thanksgiving as on a typical day.” (Source:NFPA)
Why is Thanksgiving such a fire risk?
- Host are cooking for multiple people and forget what’s on the stove. Mishaps easily occur.
- Frying turkeys and different items are sometimes out of peoples comfort zones. Not knowing the dangers of grease fires is a leading cause.
Here are NFPA’s top five tips for cooking with fire safety in mind on Thanksgiving and beyond:
- Remain in the kitchen while you’re cooking, and keep a close eye on what you fry!
- Always stay in the kitchen while frying, grilling or broiling food. If you have to leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove.
- Regularly check on food that’s simmering, baking or roasting, and use a timer to remind you that you’re cooking.
- Keep things that can catch fire such as oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels and curtains away from the cooking area.
- Be alert when cooking. If you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol, don’t use the stove or stovetop.
- If you have a small (grease) cooking fire on the stovetop and decide to fight the fire:
Smother the flames by sliding a lid over the pan and turning off the burner. Leave the pan covered until it is completely cooled. For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed. - If you’re cooking a turkey using a disposable aluminum pan, consider doubling up and using two pans to avoid a puncture, as dripping turkey juices can cause an oven fire.
If your Thanksgiving cooking plans turn into a disaster give SERVPRO of Brunswick a call (912)264-6094.
Energy Conservation Tips for Winter Chill
11/17/2019 (Permalink)
Keeping you cozy and safe this Holiday Season.
The winter's chill is approaching fast, so now is the time to take precautions and lower electricity bills by creating an energy-efficient atmosphere. By making simple changes to everyday habits, your home will be toasty while frosty air remains outdoors.
- Ensure the thermostat, HVAC, fireplaces, and heaters are working properly. Clean or replace air filters, remove dust and dirt from the unit, get fresh wood and coal for the fireplace, and/or ensure buttons/switches are functioning.
- Set the thermostat and heater at one temperature all season. A good temperature is 70 degrees. Alternatively, invest in a programmable unit.
- Insulate the home with weather stripping, plastic sheeting, and caulk. Wrap this around all entry doors, screen doors, and windows in the home and garage. Insulate the attic, basements, and crawl spaces too. This prevents air leaks from seeping in.
- Let the sunshine in on sunny days, particularly around the afternoon. The heat will warm the house to reduce dependence on heating items.
- During nightfall, reduce heater, fireplace, HVAC, and thermostat dependence and rely on comforters, sheets, blankets, and pajamas to warm you up. Turn off fireplaces, heaters, and HVAC's in unused rooms. Close the fireplace damper to conserve energy.
- Ceiling fans are a great way to stop heat from rising. Simply set the ceiling fan to turn clockwise on low speed. The warm air will circulate the rising heat down to the floor to reduce dependence on heating products. Continued use of ceiling fans means heat will travel to other occupied areas of the home.
A toasty home in the wintertime sounds wonderful. Turn this dream into reality through proactive measures like the information above. SERVPRO of Brunswick is always here to help. When using heaters and fireplaces be sure to use all safety precautions to avoid fires.
Keep a Warm and Safe Fireplace
10/28/2019 (Permalink)
Avoid hazardous chimney fires by maintaining a clean chimney.
As cooler air roles into South Georgia, many people will start cranking up the heat or starting a fire in their fireplace. A fireplace can be a unique feature adding lots of character and charm to a South Georgia home. Fireplaces can also pose a danger if not maintained and used properly.
Maintain a safe and warm fireplace by having your chimney swept and practicing fire safety.
Sweeping your chimney should occur yearly. It is best to get a professional to sweep your chimney to ensure the best results. Having your chimney swept clears the chimney of debris that can build up and catch fire over time if not cleared. Chimney sweepers also look for hazardous cracks that can cause a fire to start inside the chimney.
Chimneys should be only lit by an adult and never left unattended. The glass or screen door should always be closed when not interacting with the fire to prevent sparks from escaping into the home. Another way to remain safe is to make sure the fire is out before going to bed.
Enjoy a warm and safe fireplace.

Extinguishing a Fireplace Fire
10/28/2019 (Permalink)
Avoid unwanted smoke by avoiding water to extinguish a fireplace fire.
Fireplace Safety should be top of mind during the colder months. You should never fall asleep with a fire in the fireplace. To quickly extinguish a fireplace fire, don’t throw water on it. Throwing water on the fire will create a cloud of smoke and contaminate your home. Instead of pouring water on a fire you should:
- Spread out the embers with a fireplace poker
- Smother the fire with the ashes.
- Pour a thin layer of baking soda over the fire.
Why baking soda? Baking soda is a common ingredient in fire extinguishers. Baking soda is also used when putting out grease fires.
While water can be used to extinguish the fireplace fire, it will take more water and create a larger mess.

2. Soot Contains Toxic Chemicals: Fires require carbon dioxide, oxygen and intron, but often times there are chemicals released from materials in the home; like plastics, textiles and paints. Improper soot cleaning can cause these toxins to be reintroduced to the air and containment the home with toxins.
3. Soot Moves: Soot is on the go, moving through the air and does not stay contained to where the fire originated. Soot travels through HVAC systems which means it is spread throughout your home. Without knowledge of knowing how soot spreads, homeowners risk not resolving the entire damage.

Dealing with a Fire Damage
5/21/2019 (Permalink)
A fire in your home or business can be devastating. Your buildings and items of value may have been lost or badly damaged by the flames, heat, smoke or water. Firefighters may have found it necessary to cut holes in walls to look for hidden flames or in the roof to let out heat and smoke. The clean up after a fire will take a lot of time, patience, and preparation. Below, we are sharing the first steps you will need to take after a fire:
Insurance Company:
You will need to contact your insurance agent before any fire damage is repaired or clean-up is begun. Be prepared with information on what is covered, what needs to be repaired or replaced, and how to find reputable companies that can take care of repairs to your property for you during this time.
Important documents. You will want to take steps to find and retrieve all important documents, and replace those that have been lost or irretrievably damaged, such as birth and death records, social security cards, mortgage and banking information and records, wills, stocks, and bonds.
Soot Particles:
Try to limit movement about the home to prevent soot particles from becoming embedded in the upholstery of your furniture and carpeting. You can place towels or old linens on your rugs, upholstered furniture, and foot traffic areas to help alleviate this type of damage.
Equipment and Appliances. Changing your HVAC filters after a fire is a good idea, and if the power is out, empty your freezer and fridge and prop the doors open to get rid of smoke. Check wiring for ceiling fans before turning them on as the wiring could have been damaged during the fire.
Fire Damage Specialists:
You don’t want to wash any walls or painted surfaces, or clean carpets, etc. without contacting a fire damage specialist. Walls and other surfaces need to be properly cleaned by a professional before any repair is done.
Here at SERVPRO of Brunswick, we are ready to help you in the event of fire damage to your home or business. We are also experienced in the areas of water damage and mold prevention and remediation. Visit our website: SERVPRO of Brunswick or contact us by phone at (912) 264-6094.
Kitchen Fire - How to Prepare
4/28/2019 (Permalink)
A kitchen fire can happen in an instant, with no warning. If that happens, you will need to act fast to keep the fire from getting out of control. Take stock of what kind of fire you have and where it is. Here are a few tips on what to do:
- If it’s a fire in the oven, close the door immediately and turn off the oven. Leave the door closed! Lack of oxygen will suffocate the flames.
If the oven continues to smoke and you think the fire may have continued, call the fire department right away. - When it is a fire in a cooking pan or pot, use your oven mitt to put the lid on right away, and move it off the burner. Turn off the stove and wait for the lack of oxygen to stop the flames inside your pot.
If you are not able to safely put the lid on the flaming pan, or if there is no lid readily available, use your fire extinguisher. Always aim at the base of the fire, not the flames themselves. - Never use water to put out a grease fire! Water repels grease and can spread the fire by splattering the grease. Try one of these methods instead:
If the fire is small, put on the lid and turn off the burner.
Throw lots of baking soda on it. Do not use flour; it can explode or make the fire even worse. Smother the fire with a wet towel or other large, wet cloth. Use a fire extinguisher.
Swatting the fire with a towel, apron, or other material is likely to fan the flames and spread the fire. - If the fire is spreading and you don’t have control, get every person and pet out of the house and call 911!
If your home is damaged by a kitchen fire with soot, smoke damage, and water damage give SERVPRO of Brunswick a call to make it “Like it never even happened”

- When electricity is off- empty out freezer and refrigerator completely. Leave doors to appliance open to prevent future odor.
- Change HVAC filter; but leave system off until a trained professional can check system.
- Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers to prevent particles of soot from getting in or out out of the HVAC system.
Don’t:
- Don't attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces without first contacting your SERVPRO of Brunswick.
- Don't send garments to the dry cleaner. Improper cleaning may set smoke odor into fabric.
- Don’t turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet. Wiring may be wet or damaged. This can cause electrical shock and air movement might cause secondary damage.
- Don’t consume any food or beverage that may have been stored close to fire, heat or water. As for the food may have been contaminated
These emergency tips will assist you in taking proper action until SERVPRO of Brunswick arrives. By following these DOs and DON’Ts you minimize further damages and increase the success of restoration.

Space Heater Safety Tips
11/30/2018 (Permalink)
Safety tips for when you plug in the space heater.
In the colder months of the year, homeowners look for ways to make chilly areas warm and comfortable. While space heaters can be useful to keep small areas warm, it’s very important to use them with caution. In a 2010 study, it was found that space heaters caused 32 percent of all home heating fires but were involved in 79 percent of all home-heating related fire deaths. Fortunately, using a space heater can be safe if you follow these simple recommendations.
First, make sure that you create a three-foot safety zone around the space heater. Do not place the heater on or near any carpets, throw rugs, papers, or clothing. The space heater must be placed on a flat surface and not elevated on any cabinets, shelves, or other furniture.
Place the space heater in an area where it will not be in the way and where no one will trip on it. It’s a great idea to shop for a space heater with an automatic shut-off so that the heater will shut off if it tips over. Make sure that kids and pets are kept away from the heater for their own safety; space heaters can be quite warm to the touch. Also, pets may chew on the cords, so keep an eye on them around the space heater.
It’s a good idea to inspect the heater before every use. Don’t use the heater if there is any damage.
Never leave a space heater unattended. It’s tempting to leave it on while you’re sleeping to keep your bedroom warm. It is too risky to let these appliances run overnight when no one is nearby to make sure there are no problems.
You should never use a power strip or extension cord with a space heater. This cords could overheat due to the higher electrical demands and cause fire damage. Finally, ensure that your home smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are in working order and test them monthly.
If you do have fire damage to your home and need professional cleaning services, contact us at SERVPRO of Brunswick. We will work with you to make sure your home or business returns to normal as quickly as possible.

Kitchen Fires- The Dangers of Grease
10/5/2018 (Permalink)
A grease fire is incredibly dangerous!
To most people, a home is a place of safety, comfort, and refuge. That being said, houses can be swiftly transformed from places of safety into places of great danger by uncontrolled fires.
Uncontrolled fires can start in many ways and have many causes, but one of the most dangerous varieties of fires are grease fires. Grease fires can start and spread very quickly, and are difficult to put out without the proper fire-fighting equipment. Because of the great damage grease fires can cause, you must stay well-informed about the danger. This goes for the homeowner, apartment dweller, or the owner of a restaurant. It also pays to be aware of effective ways to prevent or stop these fires if the worst happens.
What Characterizes Grease Fires?
As their names suggest, grease fires are usually caused by built-up grease and oil around stoves, ovens, and other types of cooking apparatus. Grease fires are so common that the National Fire Protection Association states that cooking fires are one of the top causes of residential and commercial fires as well as fire-related injuries. In the cooking fire category, grease-related frying fires take the top spot. Thus, it is easy to see that fire damage prevention efforts can be made more effective by raising consumer awareness and educating people about fire safety.
What Makes Grease Fires so Dangerous?
Grease fires are dangerous for many reasons, but two of the biggest ones include the difficulty in putting them out and the high temperatures associated with them. These kinds of fires spread quite easily, and are well-known to quickly cause significant damage to structures.
What are Some Effective Ways to Mitigate Grease Fire Damages?
Fire can cause especially severe damages to structures due to the fire itself and the water and chemicals that are necessary to fight the fire. Fire damages can be very difficult to repair without the proper equipment, skills, and experience.
The good news is, your local disaster mitigation experts at SERVPRO of Brunswick stand ready to put their specialized skills to work to on your behalf. This fire originated at the dryer
A late Sunday evening in July, SERVPRO was notified of a fire happening at a local country club. Our crews arrived as the fire trucks were pulling out to survey the damage and create a game plan to remediate the affected area. SERVPRO was able to contain the damaged areas by setting up temporary walls which prevented future damage and the spread of soot. Temporary walls were also placed to ensure that the Country Club could resume with their scheduled events without any disruption from the fire. SERVPRO of Brunswick worked from sunrise to sunset getting this property back to its original beauty by cleaning the HVAC unit, scrubbing the walls, pulling up effected flooring, and disposing of debris from the fire.

Coming up with a Fire Emergency Plan
8/7/2018 (Permalink)
Fires in homes and businesses result in injuries, property damage, and even death. A plan to handle a fire emergency will help to lower the chances that these things will happen to your staff and loved ones.
We’re sharing tips today that are all part of a good fire emergency plan:
SMOKE ALARMS: Install good quality smoke alarms on or near the ceilings of your home or business in areas where people gather. In a home, the best place is near bedrooms. Installing carbon monoxide alarms in the same areas is always a good idea since CO is an odorless and colorless gas produced by burning fuels and nearly undetectable unless an alert is given.
FIRE EXTINGUISHERS: Ensure that you have at least one multipurpose fire extinguisher readily accessible. Show everyone where it is and how to use it.
FIREPLACE INSPECTIONS: Have your wood burning fireplace inspected annually in the fall before you use it during cold weather. Your HVAC unit should be looked over at this point as well. Employ a professional for these tasks.
CREATE AN ESCAPE PLAN: Have an escape plan for your family, and make sure everyone understands it and can follow the plan in case of fire. Second story homes should have an escape ladder.
REMOTE MONITORS: There are remote monitors available today to let you know if there is a fire in your home while you are away. They can be plugged into an electrical outlet easily and connected to your internet, and you will be notified by the app you download on your phone.
FIRE-RESISTANT MATERIALS: During home repair or remodeling, use fire-resistant building materials when available. For example, using a fire retardant brand of insulation can be a huge part of keeping your home or business fire safe.
Call the SERVPRO of Brunswick team anytime for help with fire safety. We are always available to assist with home or commercial cleanup after fire and water damage, as well. Our phone number is (912) 264-6094.
Fire Extinguisher Safety Tips
6/26/2018 (Permalink)
Fire extinguishers are an invaluable tool to use against small fires and can also be very effective to protect evacuation routes. According to OSHA, the most common emergency any home or business owner should plan for is a fire.
Homeowners should take the steps necessary to learn how to use the fire extinguisher kept in their home. OSHA requires all employers to train their staff thoroughly on how to use a fire extinguisher correctly as well, and to accurately assess the situation if a fire is to occur. Everyone also needs to be able to properly determine when an evacuation should take place for the safety and well-being of all those in danger. OSHA has established annual training for employees as a minimal requirement for all places of business, and this training is helpful for homeowners as well.
The PASS training technique is recommended:
- P - Pull the pin on the extinguisher.
- A - Aim the nozzle of the hose at the base of the fire.
- S - Squeeze the handle to release the extinguishing agent.
- S - Sweep the nozzle from side to side, directed at the base of the flames until the fire is extinguished.
Once someone knows how to properly operate a fire extinguisher, they should then also be trained to follow fire safety protocol. They should know how to:
- Locate and activate the fire alarm.
- Call the fire department and emergency responders immediately.
- Determine a safe evacuation route that will direct people away from flames, excessive heat, and smoke. They should also know how to keep the route from becoming blocked,
- Use the PASS technique for discharging a fire extinguisher as outlined above, and know the importance of backing away from the area if the fire flares up again.
- Evacuate the area immediately if the fire is still going and the extinguisher is empty, or if the fire grows beyond what can be safely handled without fire department personnel.
Fire extinguishers are made to handle small fires only. Excessive smoke and heat, impaired evacuation routes, and poor visibility are all conditions that can arise quickly. People need to understand that safety comes first and foremost and be prepared to evacuate if the fire grows to excessive levels.

Preventing Electrical Fires While Decorating Your Home for the Holidays
12/11/2017 (Permalink)
We love the lights but stay safe this Christmas, Brunswick!
Christmas is one of the best holidays. The lights and decorations create such a wonderful atmosphere for everyone to enjoy. Decorating your household during the holidays is one of the great American pastimes. Families filling their neighborhoods with Christmas decorations is something we look forward to every year.
However, using these lights sometimes can create a safety hazard if not done properly. Fortunately, we here at SERVPRO of Brunswick have a couple of tips that will help you prevent dangerous electrical fires from happening when you plan to decorate. Here are the tips that’ll keep your family safe, as well as prevent any costly fire damage from happening to your home.
Only Use Certified Decorations
This one tip can be deceiving from the start but has huge ramifications if not noticed before it’s too late. While there are dozens of Christmas lights for sale during the winter time, make sure that you only use lights that state somewhere on the package that national laboratories have approved them for fire safety purposes. Take your time when shopping and pick the right lights to ensure that you’re avoiding fire damage in the event of an accident.
Avoid Overloading Surge Protectors
Let’s imagine for a second that you’ve bought dozens of Christmas lights and you’re getting ready to set them up for decoration. You have a couple of surge protectors ready, and you’re getting ready to plug almost all the lights on them to save space. Before you do this, wait! Overloading a surge protector can be incredibly dangerous and cause serious fire damage hazards. If the lights are left on constantly, it will create volatile conditions for the lights to potentially catch fire. Make sure you don’t overload your surge protectors and space out your lights If possible.
Don’t Leave the Lights On
Finally, one of the most important tips that will help ensure the safety of your family overnight. While you may want to have the ambient light of your Christmas tree illuminating down the hallway, please don’t! Whatever you do this holiday season, make sure not to leave the lights on overnight. This is an incredibly dangerous habit to have, as your chances of an electrical fire skyrocket exponentially. There is no need to leave lights on overnight, so make sure to unplug them before going to bed at night to avoid any type of electrical fire.
Campfire Safety Tips
9/27/2017 (Permalink)
These campfire safety tips could save someone's life! Have fun but be careful!
Campfires can be a lot of fun, whether they are in the backyard or a remote wilderness area. However, anytime there is a fire, there is a risk of fire damage. With a campfire, the two primary concerns are falling into the fire and the fire escaping and burning the surrounding area. The good news is that there are a few simple things that can help you and your family to stay safe around the fire.
Before building a fire, you should make sure that it is safe and permissible to build the fire. Though there are a number of factors to consider, a general rule is that campfires should not be built when wind speeds are above 15 mph. Campfires are at lower risk of spreading when it is raining, the ground is wet or the temperature is low. In severely dry conditions, governmental authorities may ban all burning. A quick call to a park ranger, fire department or the police should help you to determine if there is a burning ban.
Tripping and falling into the fire is one of the most serious risks of a campfire, especially when children are present. Before building the fire, the area around the fire should be cleared of logs, large rocks and anything else that may cause a person to trip. Parents should closely watch children and forbid them from running or playing near the fire. A 10-foot circle around the fire should be cleared of any flammable objects, including vegetation. Fires should only be built in fire rings that are on level surfaces to decrease the chances of injury or the fire spreading.
It is important that you make certain that the campfire is fully extinguished before leaving the fire or going to sleep. Large chunks of wood will burn for a long period of time and should not be added to the fire late at night. When putting the fire out, you should knock the wood down flat on the ground. Water should be poured over the fire and the coals and wood turned on the wet ground to extinguish both sides. Only after the fire is cool to the touch is it safe to be left alone.
Whether it’s a campfire or a home furnace, a little bit of fire damage prevention can help to ensure a safe experience. However, the fire damage experts here at SERVPRO of Brunswick are ready to help if your home or other structure is damaged by fire.
